The Galway Central School District currently has a full time, 12 month School Bus Dispatcher position in the Transportation Department. This position is per CSEA contract and offers excellent benefits with a starting salary of $20 per hour. This position is contingent upon your successful completion and passing of a civil service exam and will be a provisional appointment until the results are received. Details of the job are as follows:DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: An employee in this class is responsible for the dispatching of drivers and school buses in a central school district. The position involves the responsibility for seeing that all school district buses are staffed with divers following established routes and prepared time schedules. The position differs from that of Head Bus Driver and Head Automotive Mechanic in that the position does not involve supervision or direction of the repair and maintenance of school buses. The Dispatcher works closely with automotive repair personnel to maximize fleet utilization. The work is performed under direct supervision of the Transportation Supervisor with leeway allowed for carrying out the details of the work. Supervision is exercised over School Bus Drivers by observation and report. Does related work as required.EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Illustrative only)Dispatches drivers and buses on assigned daily routes;Operates radio telephone equipment;Assigns substitute bus drivers to replace absent regular drivers;Completes and files daily reports and outlines on all bus routes and buses as required;Assists Transportation Supervisor in planning bus routes and assigning drivers;Arranges with the mechanical staff supervisors for the pick up and repair disabled buses;Schedules drivers for field trips, sporting events and special activities;Reviews daily tachographs for all bus runs;Arranges driver meetings as needed;Recommends bus route changes for the consideration of Transportation Supervisor;Works on the development of campus shuttle routes with Assistant Transportation Supervisor;Assists in resolving informal grievances of bus drivers;Assists in handling complaints form drivers, parents and students in regard to bus routes and schedules;Coordinates the use of district vehicles for Town recreation programs and Senior Citizen trips.REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Good knowledge of school transportation systems and the operation of buses; good knowledge of the geography of the district; working knowledge of the operation of radio telephone equipment; ability to plan, direct and supervise the work of others; ability to deal effectively with the public; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to maintain records and prepare reports; good hearing and clear diction; tact; good physical condition.
