The Glens Falls City School District is seeking interested applicants for a School Security Officer position. DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: An employee in this position is responsible for providing general security for occupants and property of assigned school district buildings, parking lots and sites in accordance with established security procedures. This classification is unarmed and does not have the power to perform policing duties such as the arrest of individuals for security breaches. The incumbent is not responsible for conducting inspections of buildings and grounds for hazardous conditions and safety violations. The work is performed under the general supervision of a school administrator with leeway allowed for carrying out the work in accordance with prescribed policies and procedures. Supervision is generally not a responsibility of the position. Does related work as required.TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)Patrols and maintains highly visible presence throughout the school day around campus, (corridors, lobby, cafeteria, restrooms and parking lots, etc.) to protect persons and property, maintain order and ensure compliance with school rules;Prevents unauthorized visitors from entering school buildings and/or loitering on school grounds; Ascertains individual’s business on school property and responds accordingly;Reports all violations of law and school district policies to the administration;Informs counselors, parents, teachers and school administrators of student behavior problems;Utilizes de-escalation techniques in accordance with prescribed school policies and procedures, such as Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI);Acts as a liaison with police (including assigned school resource officers), fire and other municipal departments to ensure maximum use of their services in order to provide adequate security and safety;Assists in investigating complaints;Serves as a participant in the school district safety committee;May assist in handling emergency disciplinary matters;May conduct security inspections at school facilities/sites; Prepares reports and assists in special assignments as directed; Uses computer applications or other automated systems such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail and database software in performing work assignments. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND ATTRIBUTES: Good knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques employed in establishing and maintaining building security; Good knowledge of safety and security principles, practices and techniques; Ability and skill in observing and detecting unusual occurrences or behavior; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, school personnel, subordinates and the general public; Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;Ability to show initiative, exercise sound judgment, and tact; Ability to remain calm in stressful situations; Ability to use computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail and database software.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and:Associate’s Degree* or higher in criminal justice or related field and two (2) years of full-time (or equivalent part-time) paid work experience performing security guard or related duties; orFour (4) years of full-time (or equivalent part-time) paid work experience performing security guard or related duties; orTwo (2) years of full-time (or equivalent part-time) paid work experience as a police officer or peace officer; orAn equivalent combination of the foregoing training and experience.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:**Compliance with the requirements established under New York State General Business Law Article 7-A for security guards throughout the term of employment; andCompliance with school district training requirements for Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) within prescribed timeframe; and A school district may require possession of a valid New York State Motor Vehicle Operator’s license at the time of appointment and throughout the term of employment.*NOTE: Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education.
