Position Summary : The Director of Science provides districtwide leadership for the development, implementation, supervision, and continuous improvement of the K-12 Science program. Working collaboratively with the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, building principals, teachers, and instructional leaders, the Director ensures a coherent, rigorous, standards-aligned science program across all schools. The Director is responsible for strengthening curriculum, instruction, assessment, professional learning, and student achievement in science while ensuring vertical and horizontal alignment across grade levels and courses. The Director supports teachers and administrators through instructional leadership, classroom observation, coaching, data analysis, resource allocation, and program evaluation. Qualifications : New York State administrative certification, School District Leader (SDL). Appropriate New York State certification and successful teaching experience in Science. Demonstrated experience in educational leadership, administration, supervision, and/or curriculum leadership. Strong knowledge of K-12 science curriculum, instruction, assessment, and standards. Demonstrated experience with curriculum development, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement. Strong knowledge of effective instructional practices and the ability to support teachers in improving classroom instruction. Demonstrated ability to analyze student performance data and use findings to guide instructional and programmatic decisions. Strong communication, collaboration, organizational, and leadership skills. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 1. Districtwide Science Leadership: Provide leadership, direction, and oversight for the district’s K-12 Science program and establish clear expectations for high-quality science teaching and learning. 2. Curriculum Development and Alignment: Lead the development, review, implementation, and evaluation of K–12 science curricula, instructional materials, pacing guides, laboratory experiences, and related resources to ensure consistency and continuity across schools and grade levels. 3. Vertical and Horizontal Articulation: Collaborate with principals, teachers, Science Leads, department leaders, and other instructional staff to ensure vertical and horizontal alignment of science curriculum, instruction, and expectations throughout the district. 4. Instructional Leadership: Regularly visit classrooms, observe science instruction, provide actionable feedback, and work directly with teachers and instructional leaders to strengthen instructional practices and student learning. 5. Teacher and Leadership Support: Serve as a resource and advisor to science teachers, Science Leads, administrators, and other instructional staff regarding curriculum, instruction, assessment, laboratory practices, instructional resources, and program implementation. 6. Assessment and Student Achievement: Oversee districtwide science assessments and testing programs; analyze student performance data and other measures of program effectiveness; identify trends, strengths, and areas requiring additional support; and coordinate appropriate instructional responses. 7. Program Evaluation: Conduct ongoing needs assessments and evaluate the effectiveness of science programs, curricula, interventions, resources, and instructional practices. Recommend modifications and improvements based on student needs, data, classroom observations, and program outcomes. 8. Professional Development: Identify professional learning needs and plan, coordinate, and facilitate professional development for science teachers and instructional staff to support curriculum implementation and improved classroom practice. 9. Instructional Resources: Evaluate science textbooks, digital resources, instructional programs, laboratory materials, equipment, and other resources and make recommendations regarding district adoption and implementation. 10. Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Coordinate the Science program with other academic disciplines and district initiatives to strengthen coherence and provide meaningful interdisciplinary learning opportunities for students. 11. Budget and Resource Management: Assist in developing and managing the districtwide Science budget and make recommendations regarding instructional materials, equipment, supplies, programs, and other expenditures based on identified priorities and student needs. 12. Grants and External Funding: Identify appropriate grant opportunities, assist with the development of science-related grant proposals, and support the implementation and monitoring of funded programs. 13. Reporting and Communication: Prepare reports, presentations, data analyses, and recommendations for the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction and other district leaders regarding student achievement, program implementation, assessment results, curriculum needs, and districtwide science initiatives. 14. Collaboration with School Leadership: Work closely with building principals to address school-specific science needs while maintaining consistent districtwide curriculum, instructional expectations, and program goals. 15. Continuous Improvement: Monitor the implementation and effectiveness of the district’s Science program and recommend changes necessary to improve instructional quality, program coherence, and student outcomes. Additional Responsibilities : Perform other duties and responsibilities related to the position as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction or Superintendent of Schools.
