Freeport Public Schools is seeking an accomplished, collaborative, and visionary educational leader to serve as Director of English Language Arts (ELA), K-12 within the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. This is a twelve-month administrative position reporting to the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction. The successful candidate will provide districtwide leadership for the planning, development, implementation, supervision, evaluation, and continuous improvement of English Language Arts and literacy instruction across grades K-12. The Director will establish and advance a coherent, rigorous, standards-aligned K-12 literacy program designed to ensure that every student develops the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to become a proficient reader, effective writer, thoughtful communicator, critical thinker, and college, career, and civic-ready learner. The Director will lead efforts to strengthen instruction in reading, writing, speaking, listening, language, research, vocabulary, comprehension, and critical literacy while ensuring that curriculum and instructional practices reflect current evidence and New York State expectations. Working closely with the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, district administrators, principals, instructional coaches, department chairs, teachers, interventionists, special education and multilingual learner staff, and other instructional leaders, the Director will translate district priorities into effective classroom practice. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to develop a clear instructional vision, build capacity among educators, use data to drive decision-making, and lead sustainable improvements in student literacy outcomes. Key Responsibilities The Director will provide comprehensive leadership for the district's K-12 ELA and literacy program, including the development, review, revision, and monitoring of curriculum aligned with the New York State Next Generation English Language Arts Learning Standards, applicable New York State Education Department requirements, and current research in literacy instruction. The Director will ensure strong vertical and horizontal alignment of curriculum, instruction, assessment, resources, and expectations across grade levels and schools. Responsibilities will include leading the development and refinement of curriculum maps, pacing guides, units of study, instructional resources, common assessments, and other curriculum documents. The Director will support the selection and evaluation of high-quality instructional materials, texts, digital resources, intervention programs, and assessment tools and will make recommendations regarding curriculum revisions and resource adoption. A major focus of the position will be strengthening evidence-based literacy instruction across the district. The Director will support effective practices in foundational reading skills, phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, writing, oral language, speaking and listening, research, and critical literacy. At the elementary level, the Director will provide leadership for strong early literacy foundations, universal screening, progress monitoring, intervention, enrichment, and alignment between core instruction and supplemental supports. At the secondary level, the Director will oversee and support rigorous ELA programming, including Regents-level, honors, Advanced Placement, elective, college-level, and other advanced coursework. The Director will establish and monitor districtwide goals for literacy achievement and work collaboratively with school leaders and instructional teams to identify trends, address achievement gaps, and develop strategic action plans. The position will require strong analytical skills and the ability to use multiple sources of student achievement data, including New York State assessments, Regents Examination results, district benchmark assessments, universal screening data, diagnostic assessments, and classroom-based measures, to inform curriculum, instruction, intervention, professional learning, and resource allocation. The successful candidate will help establish systems that enable educators to move effectively from data analysis to instructional action. The Director will support the development and implementation of common formative and summative assessments and will work with schools to monitor the effectiveness of literacy interventions and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS). Collaboration with Special Education, Pupil Personnel Services, ENL/Multilingual Learner, intervention, and other departments will be essential to ensuring that students receive appropriate scaffolds, enrichment, acceleration, intervention, and access to rigorous learning opportunities. Professional Learning and Instructional Leadership The Director will play a central role in developing educator capacity across the district. The successful candidate will design, coordinate, facilitate, and evaluate high-quality professional learning for teachers, instructional coaches, department chairs, administrators, and other instructional staff. Professional learning priorities may include evidence-based reading and writing instruction, foundational literacy, differentiation, academic vocabulary, disciplinary literacy, assessment, intervention, culturally responsive and sustaining practices, and other areas identified through student achievement data, classroom observations, educator feedback, and district priorities. The Director will provide leadership and direction to ELA instructional coaches and other staff supporting literacy instruction. The Director will develop systems that promote instructional coaching, collaborative planning, professional learning communities, peer learning, and job-embedded professional development. Through modeling, classroom observations, instructional walkthroughs, and actionable feedback, the Director will help educators strengthen instructional practice and support administrators in recognizing and promoting high-quality ELA instruction. Equity, Access, and Student Success Freeport Public Schools seeks a leader who is deeply committed to equity, access, and high expectations for every student. The Director will ensure that all students have meaningful access to rigorous, engaging, and culturally responsive ELA instruction and high-quality texts that reflect diverse perspectives, experiences, cultures, and voices. The Director will monitor participation and achievement patterns in advanced coursework, honors and Advanced Placement programs, interventions, and other instructional opportunities to identify and address barriers to access and success. The Director will collaborate with ENL/World Languages leadership to strengthen supports for multilingual learners and with Special Education and Pupil Personnel Services leadership to ensure that students with disabilities receive appropriate instructional support and intervention. The Director will also promote literacy across the curriculum by supporting disciplinary literacy practices that enable students to read, write, communicate, research, and think critically across content areas. Leadership, Collaboration, and Program Management As a member of the district's Curriculum and Instruction leadership team, the Director will advise the Assistant Superintendent regarding ELA curriculum, instruction, assessment, staffing, professional learning, resources, and program needs. The Director will facilitate K-12 curriculum committees, professional learning communities, instructional teams, and other collaborative structures and will establish clear implementation plans, timelines, expectations, and accountability measures for district initiatives. The position will also involve supporting personnel processes, including recruitment, interviewing, onboarding, mentoring, and professional support for ELA teachers, instructional coaches, and other literacy-related personnel as assigned. The Director may participate in classroom observations and instructional walkthroughs and provide recommendations regarding instructional implementation, professional learning, and staffing needs. The Director will assist with development and management of the district ELA budget and will ensure that instructional resources are selected and allocated strategically based on student needs, program effectiveness, district priorities, and fiscal responsibility. Responsibilities may include managing contracts and services, coordinating instructional material purchases, identifying grant opportunities, and supporting grant development and reporting. The Director will also support communication with families and community members regarding literacy programs, assessments, interventions, enrichment opportunities, and district instructional priorities. The Director may participate in curriculum and literacy events and develop resources that help families support literacy development at home. Qualifications Candidates must possess a New York State School District Leader (SDL) or School District Administrator (SDA) certification, or be eligible for appropriate New York State administrative certification, as well as New York State teaching certification in English Language Arts, literacy/reading, elementary education, or another appropriate instructional area. A master's degree from an accredited college or university is required. The successful candidate will have demonstrated teaching experience and expertise in literacy and/or English Language Arts, along with experience in curriculum development, instructional leadership, assessment, professional learning, and data-informed decision-making. Candidates should possess strong knowledge of the New York State Next Generation ELA Learning Standards and applicable NYSED requirements and guidance. The ideal candidate will demonstrate deep knowledge of K-12 literacy development and evidence-based reading and writing practices; strong expertise in curriculum design, standards alignment, assessment, intervention, differentiation, and instructional coaching; and the ability to establish a coherent K-12 instructional vision and translate that vision into effective practice. The successful candidate will be a strategic thinker and skilled communicator who can analyze complex information, solve problems, manage multiple priorities, facilitate adult learning, and lead organizational change. Strong written, verbal, interpersonal, organizational, presentation, and relationship-building skills are essential.
