Director of Elementary Humanities (K-6) Department: Curriculum and Instruction Reports To: Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Position Summary The Director of Elementary Humanities (K-6) provides strategic leadership for the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of high-quality humanities instruction across the Freeport Union Free School District. The Director oversees curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional learning in English Language Arts, literacy, Social Studies, library/media education, and interdisciplinary humanities programs. Working collaboratively with school and district leaders, the Director ensures that instructional programs align with district curriculum, instructional priorities, and evidence-based practices while promoting academic excellence, equitable learning opportunities, and college, career, and civic readiness for all students. Essential Responsibilities Instructional Leadership Lead the implementation of rigorous, standards-based instruction in English Language Arts, literacy, Social Studies, and interdisciplinary humanities programs across grades K-6. Develop and monitor district initiatives that strengthen student achievement in reading, writing, speaking, listening, literacy, history, geography, civics, and inquiry-based learning. Collaborate with principals, assistant principals, instructional coaches, and teachers to strengthen instructional practices through coaching, classroom observations, collaborative planning, and data-informed decision making. Support the integration of literacy, historical thinking, civic learning, research, discussion, and inquiry across all elementary grade levels and content areas. Promote instructional practices that develop critical thinking, communication, creativity, and problem-solving while fostering meaningful connections among humanities disciplines. Curriculum and Assessment Lead the development, evaluation, implementation, and continuous refinement of curriculum aligned with district priorities and instructional standards. Oversee the development and implementation of high-quality instructional materials, formative and summative assessments, and digital learning resources in English Language Arts and Social Studies. Analyze district, school, and classroom data to identify trends, evaluate program effectiveness, and guide instructional improvements. Ensure curriculum reflects culturally responsive, inclusive, and student-centered instructional practices. Support schools in implementing instructional programs that prepare students for long-term academic success and future state assessment expectations. Professional Learning Design, facilitate, and evaluate professional learning for principals, assistant principals, instructional coaches, and teachers. Develop professional learning communities that promote collaboration, instructional excellence, and continuous improvement in literacy and Social Studies instruction. Provide ongoing coaching, mentoring, and instructional support to educators implementing district curriculum and instructional initiatives. Build leadership capacity among school-based instructional leaders and teacher leaders. Program Management Manage district humanities initiatives, grants, and strategic projects. Oversee the selection, implementation, and evaluation of instructional resources, textbooks, library/media resources, and digital learning tools. Develop and monitor departmental budgets and instructional resource allocations. Ensure compliance with district, state, and federal instructional requirements. Prepare reports, presentations, and recommendations for district leadership and the Board of Education. Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement Partner with district leadership, school administrators, families, higher education institutions, libraries, museums, historical organizations, and community partners to strengthen humanities programming. Collaborate with departments supporting multilingual learners, students with disabilities, gifted education, and college and career readiness to ensure equitable instructional opportunities. Represent the district in regional curriculum initiatives and professional organizations. Foster collaborative relationships that encourage innovation, continuous improvement, and shared responsibility for student success. Equity and Student Achievement Promote equitable access to high-quality English Language Arts and Social Studies instruction for all students. Support multilingual learners, students with disabilities, and diverse student populations through inclusive, evidence-based instructional practices. Ensure instructional programs reflect diverse cultures, perspectives, and experiences while promoting literacy, historical understanding, and civic responsibility. Lead initiatives that reduce achievement gaps, increase student engagement, and improve academic outcomes for all learners. Qualifications Required Master's degree in Education, Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Leadership, English, History, Literacy, Social Studies Education, or a related field. Valid New York State School Building Leader (SBL), School District Leader (SDL), School Administrator and Supervisor (SAS), or eligibility for certification. Minimum of five years of successful teaching experience in elementary education. Minimum of three years of leadership experience in curriculum, instruction, instructional coaching, or school administration. Demonstrated expertise in elementary English Language Arts, literacy, Social Studies, curriculum development, and instructional leadership. Strong knowledge of New York State Learning Standards, assessment practices, and evidence-based instructional strategies. Experience using student achievement data to improve instructional outcomes. Preferred Doctoral degree in Education or Educational Leadership. Experience leading district-wide curriculum and instructional initiatives. Experience managing grants, instructional budgets, and strategic projects. Knowledge of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), Response to Intervention (RTI), and evidence-based literacy practices. Experience supporting diverse student populations in an urban or suburban school district. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Expertise in elementary English Language Arts, Social Studies, literacy, curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Strong understanding of foundational literacy, disciplinary literacy, inquiry-based learning, historical thinking, and civic education. Knowledge of culturally responsive instructional practices and equitable learning environments. Ability to analyze multiple sources of student achievement data to inform instructional improvement. Exceptional leadership, organizational, communication, and project management skills. Experience facilitating adult learning, coaching educators, and leading professional development. Demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships across schools, departments, families, and community organizations. Proficiency with instructional technology, assessment platforms, and educational data systems. Working Conditions Regular travel between district schools and offices. Occasional evening and weekend meetings, professional development sessions, and community events. Ability to manage multiple district initiatives and competing priorities in a dynamic educational environment.
