Position Summary The Director of Humanities (Grades 7-12) provides strategic leadership for the planning, implementation, and continuous improvement of humanities education across the district's middle and high schools. The Director oversees curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional learning in English Language Arts, Social Studies, literacy, and interdisciplinary humanities programs. Working collaboratively with school and district leaders, the Director ensures that instructional programs are aligned with the Freeport Union Free School District's curriculum, instructional priorities, and strategic goals while preparing students for college, career, and civic life. The Director is committed to advancing equitable learning opportunities and improving academic outcomes for all students. Essential Responsibilities Instructional Leadership Provide leadership for the implementation of rigorous, standards-based instruction in English Language Arts, Social Studies, literacy, and interdisciplinary humanities programs in grades 7-12. Develop and implement district initiatives that strengthen student achievement in reading, writing, literacy, history, civics, geography, economics, and related humanities disciplines. Support principals, assistant principals, instructional coaches, and teachers through coaching, classroom observations, collaborative planning, and instructional feedback. Promote instructional practices that develop critical thinking, close reading, historical inquiry, analytical writing, research, discussion, civic engagement, and effective communication. Foster interdisciplinary learning experiences that connect humanities with science, mathematics, the arts, technology, and career pathways. Curriculum and Assessment Lead the development, implementation, evaluation, and continuous refinement of curriculum aligned with district priorities and instructional standards. Oversee the selection and implementation of high-quality instructional materials, digital resources, and common assessments in English Language Arts and Social Studies. Analyze district, school, and classroom data to identify trends, monitor student progress, and guide instructional decision making. Ensure curriculum reflects culturally responsive, inclusive, and student-centered instructional practices. Support schools in preparing students for Regents examinations, state assessments, and graduation requirements in English Language Arts and Social Studies. Professional Learning Design, facilitate, and evaluate professional learning for administrators, instructional coaches, department leaders, and teachers. Develop professional learning communities that promote collaboration, instructional excellence, and continuous improvement. Provide ongoing coaching and instructional support to schools implementing district curriculum and instructional initiatives. Build leadership capacity among school-based instructional leaders and teacher leaders. Program Administration Manage district humanities initiatives, strategic projects, and grant-funded programs. Oversee the selection, implementation, and evaluation of instructional resources and digital learning tools. Develop and monitor departmental budgets and instructional resource allocations. Ensure compliance with district, state, and federal instructional requirements. Prepare reports, presentations, and recommendations for district leadership and the Board of Education. Collaboration and Community Engagement Partner with district leadership, school administrators, colleges and universities, libraries, museums, historical organizations, and community partners to strengthen humanities programming. Collaborate with departments supporting multilingual learners, students with disabilities, gifted education, and college and career readiness to ensure equitable instructional opportunities. Engage families and community stakeholders in initiatives that promote literacy, historical understanding, civic engagement, and academic achievement. Equity and Student Success Promote equitable access to high-quality English Language Arts and Social Studies instruction for all students. Support schools in implementing instructional practices that meet the diverse academic, linguistic, and social-emotional needs of learners. Foster learning environments that value students' identities, experiences, perspectives, and voices. Lead initiatives that increase student engagement, improve literacy and social studies achievement, reduce achievement gaps, and improve graduation outcomes. Qualifications Required Master's degree in Education, Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Leadership, English, History, Literacy, Social Studies Education, or a closely related field. Valid New York State School Building Leader (SBL), School District Leader (SDL), School Administrator and Supervisor (SAS), or eligibility for certification. Minimum of seven years of successful educational experience, including classroom teaching in secondary English Language Arts, Social Studies, or another humanities discipline. Minimum of three years of successful leadership experience as a department chair, instructional coach, assistant principal, principal, district administrator, or curriculum leader. Demonstrated expertise in curriculum development, instructional leadership, assessment, and professional learning. Strong knowledge of New York State Learning Standards, Regents requirements, and evidence-based instructional practices in English Language Arts and Social Studies. Preferred Doctoral degree in Education or Educational Leadership. Experience leading district-wide curriculum and instructional initiatives. Experience managing grants, budgets, and cross-departmental initiatives. Experience supporting diverse student populations in an urban or suburban school district. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Expertise in secondary English Language Arts, Social Studies, literacy, curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Strong understanding of adolescent literacy, disciplinary literacy, historical inquiry, civic education, and writing across the curriculum. Knowledge of culturally responsive instructional practices and equitable learning environments. Ability to analyze multiple sources of student achievement data to inform instructional improvement. Strong leadership, organizational, communication, and project management skills. Excellent written, verbal, facilitation, and presentation skills. Demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships across schools, departments, and community organizations. Proficiency with instructional technology, assessment platforms, and educational data systems. Working Conditions Regular travel between middle and high schools throughout the district. Occasional evening and weekend meetings, professional development sessions, and community events. Ability to manage multiple district initiatives, timelines, and competing priorities.
