Freeport Public Schools has an anticipated opening for a Special Education Life Skills Teacher for the 2024-2025 school year.This position is for a teacher in an 8-1-2 Life Skills class. The program focuses on student growth in social, academic, and vocational skills. The teacher is responsible for teaching English, Math, and Activities of Daily Living, as well as encouraging and supervising students' exploration within their school community. The class requires routine, structure, and behavior management strategies. Experience with ABA preferred. In addition, the teacher needs to collaborate with related service providers, and will be responsible for working with assistant(s) and health aides should any student be assigned to work with one.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (include but not limited to):Develops and uses instructional materials suitable for verbal and/or visual instruction of students with a wide range of mental, physical, and emotional maturity.Understand and align instruction and coaching with IEP program goals, design and expected outcomes.Provides individual and group instruction designed to meet individual needs and help the students make a satisfactory transition to school.Establishes and maintains standards of classroom management required to achieve effective participation in all activities.Evaluates academic and social growth of students and keeps appropriate records.Provides appropriate instruction and activities for students to meet school/district policies, goals and objectives.Communicates with parents through a variety of means.Holds parent conferences to discuss the individual student progress and interpret the school program.Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health and learning problems.QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED The position requires current NYS certification in the area of Special Education (K-6/1-6). Bilingual extension (Spanish) preferred, not required.
