Title: Teacher to the Visually ImpairedReports to: Supervisor of Special EducationQualifications: NYS Blind and Visually Impaired Certification Job Summary:Administers standardized and informal diagnostic tests to assess the strength and skills of individual students for education prescriptive purposes and for evaluation and achievement purposes.Drafts appropriate annual goals and short-term objectives to present at the annual CSE meeting.Evaluates and re-evaluates short-term objectives on a regular basis throughout the school year.Keeps anecdotal records on student behaviors or events which may be needed for local CSE decision-making.Keeps abreast of changes and developments in the field by attending professional meetings, reading professional journals and other publications.Collects medical information from nurses, physicians, ophthalmologists, low vision clinics, etc., on individual students and interpret this information to others involved with the student.Identifies and orders educational materials and special equipment that are indicated from medical and educational assessment to be needed by individual students to meet individual students individualized educational program goals.Orders large print textbooks and Braille books as required for individual students to meet individual educational needs.Acquires Braille materials for students to use in the regular classroom. Establish contact with braillest and secure volunteers as necessary.Teaches special subject areas such as body image, optacon, Braille, abacus, orientation concepts, typing and visual techniques to individual students as indicated on the IEP’s.Teaches daily living skills, self-help skills, readiness skills, fine and gross motor skills as indicated on the student’s IEP.Tutors students in academic subjects and correct Braille papers for teachers if needed.Consults with parents, administrators, psychologists, teachers, counselors, and all others involved with the education of the student to provide input and feedback on students’ needs and progress.Conducts and attends parent conferences as required or needed.Provides in-service programs to teachers, support staff and parents about visually impaired students, including information about the characteristics of blind children, and ways for modifying the environment for the visually impaired students to promote successful mainstreaming for these students.Attends Committee on Special Education meetings as requested by component district Committees on the Handicapped and/or Director of Special Education.Assists in the evaluation of prospective visually impaired students for Committees on Special Education of component school districts.Follows the schedule and building procedures of the building of assignment.Carries out other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Supervisor/Director of Special Education and Itinerant Services.
