Assistant Supervisor of Special EducationJob DescriptionResponsibilities:Supervise and administer all district programs for children with disabilities under the Individuals and Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)Become knowledgeable about the developments and trends in special education, instructional management and supervision, including attendance at meetings and training for assistant supervisors.Supervise the location, identification and evaluation process for students with disabilitiesConsult with teaching staff to determine needs of specific students and programsConsult with teachers to determine instructional materials and supplies needed for students/programsCollaborate with school district level committees to develop plans and recommendations for inclusion of students in all aspects of the educational programs. Provide on-going, regularly scheduled consultation to regular and general education personnel in the district On a regular basis visit special education and regular education classrooms to observe effectiveness of the instructional program and appropriateness of IEP goals and objectivesMonitor operation of programs for children with disabilities to ensure operation in accordance with federal, state regulations and approved policies, procedures and guidelines.Act as a liaison with other public and private agencies and individuals who provide services to students with disabilities in the district.Disseminate information as appropriate to district personnel, parents and students. Participate in long range planning for department and district Participate in budget planningAssist with mandated reportsAssist with oversight of related service providers and case managementMentor and develop expertise in special education staffCommunicate in a timely manner with staff, parents, administrators and community agenciesOversee and ensure completion of IEP meetings in a timely mannerReview timelines and paperwork for complianceIdentify professional development needsReview IEPs for qualityAttend, co-lead and contribute to Special Education Department meetingsProvide supervision and evaluation for untenured special education staffSupervise special education enrollment for assigned buildingsBe knowledgeable about special education data on building and district levelParticipate and/or facilitate all corrective action plans required by state education departmentMinimum QualificationsBS and/or MS in Special EducationNew York State Teaching and Administrative Certification, SAS and/or SDAAt least five years of distinguished experience in the field of education. Experience in school administration highly desirable.
