TEACHING ASSISTANT Distinguishing features of the ClassThe Teacher Assistant shall work under the supervision of the principal or the assigned teacher to establish goals and under the direction of the teacher will assist the teacher to achieve these established goals. The Teacher Assistant shall direct and manage small groups and individuals both adults and children in activities designed to meet the educational goals. The Teacher Assistant will work at the time appropriate to maintain maximum use of facilities and equipment. The Teacher Assistant shall administer and manage testing of participants in the educational program. Does related work as required.Specific Duties (Additional duties may be added from time to time)Administers scores and records such achievement and diagnostic tests as the teacher recommends for individual students.Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills.Assists the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on an understanding of individual students, their needs, interests and abilities.Guides independent study, enrichment works and developmental work set up and assigned by the teacher.Serves as the chief source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher.Alerts the regular teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student.Checks and records student attendance.Catalogues and files instructional materials, maintains an inventory of supplies and equipment and prepares orders or requisitions for needed material with the teacher.Helps students master equipment or instructional materials assigned by the teacher.Assists students in the library or media center.Assists with the supervision of students during lunch periods, assemblies, play periods and on field trips. Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and QualitiesGood general intelligence; familiarity with classroom routine; ability to establish good relationships with students, teachers and co-workers; ability to communicate effectively; ability to establish and maintain discipline; tact; courtesy; dependability; initiate and resourcefulness; good moral character; neat personal appearance and good physical condition. Acceptable Training and ExperienceNew York State Certification as a Teacher Assistant.
