The East Meadow School District is seeking candidates for a Part-Time Orientation and Mobility Specialist. Orientation and mobility (O&M) specialists teach individuals with visual impairments to travel safely, purposefully, and independently in their environment.This specialist will assist students with utilizing their remaining senses to gain awareness of the environment in order to safely navigate within the school.Responsibilities include:Teaching skills to meet the current and future orientation and mobility needs of their students, accounting for each student’s goals, travel environments, and visual prognoses.Utilizing a guided exploration and problem-solving approach that is customized to the goals and skills of each learner.Incorporating methods and strategies that include using non-visual techniques (auditory and tactual) and visual techniques including optimizing reliable remaining vision.Teaching strategies and problem-solving skills with the goal of developing independent travelers with a high level of self-confidence.Candidate is able to plan and conduct individualized comprehensive O&M assessments, synthesize the findings in a professionally written report, and communicate results with students, families, and members of the individualized intervention/education team, as appropriate.Qualified candidates can submit their resume, letter of interest and proof of certification through OLAS.
