Job Description: The Library Media Specialist supports our teachers, students, and administrators in our Elementary Schools by identifying and providing appropriate library and media resources essential for instructional use. This position involves conducting engaging, age-appropriate classes and activities—such as read-alouds, storytelling, book talks, and contests—to actively promote the enjoyment of literature and strengthen literacy skills across the student body. Furthermore, the Specialist coordinates and fulfills requests for audiovisual and media equipment, ensuring its availability and readiness for instructional purposes. A key responsibility is to evaluate books, periodicals, and other library materials to determine retention, necessary repair needs, or removal, thereby maintaining a current and high-quality collection. Duties include, but are not limited to:Assess and troubleshoot media equipment, arrange repairs, and recommend new acquisitions based on instructional needs.Maintain an accurate and up-to-date inventory of library books, hardware/software, media equipment, and related instructional materials.Operate media production equipment and systems (e.g., computers, projectors, smart boards, editing tools) to support instructional and school-wide communication needs.Participate in grade level meetings, professional development sessions, and professional learning communities to enhance instructional practices and improve student achievement.Perform routine maintenance and operational checks on media equipment to ensure consistent functionality.Prepare and manage manual and electronic reports (e.g., collection statistics, schedules, textbook orders, overdue notices, fines) to support school operations and accountability.Process library books, periodicals, software, and media materials (including logging, barcoding, shelving, and reporting) and supervise library assistants in these tasks.Issue library cards, administer notices for missing or damaged materials, and manage overdue processes to maintain equitable access to resources.Repair books and library materials to extend the life of the collection and ensure availability.Respond to inquiries from students, staff, and parents regarding resource availability, reference assistance, and overdue materials.Organize field trips, such as visits to the local libraryQualifications:Valid NYS Library Media certification required.
