Anticipated VacancyPRINCIPAL ALTERNATIVE HIGH SCHOOL (1.0 FTE) LOCATION(S): ALTERNATIVE HIGH SCHOOL TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Full-time, 12-month, tenure track, building-level administrative assignmentCompetitive salary; negotiable based on qualifications and experienceFull complement of health benefits REPORTS TO: District Superintendent SUPERVISES: All certified and non-certified staff at the Alternative High School QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCIES: Possesses New York State Certificate for School Building Administrator, with a minimum of 3 years in a leadership role.Holds a permanent teacher’s certification.Has successful high school teaching experience with a minimum of six years teaching experience, three of which are working with “at-risk” populations.Has strong interpersonal and communication skills.Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of curriculum development and program evaluation, child growth and development, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessment and diagnosis, and research related to learning. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Principal of Alternative High School will:Provide leadership and managerial oversight of instructional programs and school operations to ensure a school climate that fosters the educational development of each student at the Alternative High SchoolExercise sound judgment and appropriate discretion in the administration of professional dutiesDemonstrate an understanding of the regulations regarding the operations of a high schoolDemonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabularyDemonstrate the ability to use electronic equipment for word processing, data management information retrieval, visual and audio presentations Pg. 1 of 2JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Principal of Alternative High School will:Assume responsibility for the management of the school in accordance with law, administrative code, Board policies, and regulationsExercise leadership in school-level planning for improvement of instruction. Involve staff, students, and parents in the development of school plans to achieve student performance objectives, curriculum content standards and core course proficienciesEstablish and maintain an effective learning climate in the schoolAssist in the selection of appropriate instructional materials and monitor delivery of the instructional program. Participate in the development, evaluation and revision of curriculum and assume responsibility for the implementation of approved programsPlan, organize and supervise all curricular and extra-curricular activitiesInterview, recommend for appointment, assign, supervise and evaluate the performance of all school employees and assist them in achievement of their job goalsConduct observations of teaching staff members, prepare written comments and offer constructive suggestions for improvement when appropriatePrepare and submit the school’s budget requests and monitor the expenditure of fundsEnsure the safekeeping of student and personnel files and other confidential records and documents and the destruction of public records in accordance with law and regulationsProtect confidentiality of records and information gained as part of exercising professional duties and use discretion in sharing such information within legal confinesPrepare or supervise the preparation of all reports, records and other paperwork required or appropriate to the school’s administration.Conduct staff meetings as necessary for the proper functioning of the schoolPlan and supervise regularly scheduled parent/teacher conferences and make arrangements for special conferences as necessaryEnsure the proper collection, safekeeping, and accounting of school activity fundsMaintain positive, cooperative, and mutually supportive relationships with the administration, instructional staff, students, parents, and representatives of resource agencies within the communityAttend required staff meetings and serve, as appropriate, on staff committeesContinue to grow professionally through collaboration with colleagues and professional growth experiencesPerform any duties that are within the scope of employment and certifications, as assigned and not otherwise prohibited by law or regulationAdhere to New York school law, State Board of Education rules and regulations, Board of Education policies and regulations, school regulations and procedures, and contractual obligationsParticipate in CSE meetings as neededPerform other related duties as may be assigned by the Deputy Superintendent/ District Superintendent.
