POSITION TITLE: Teacher-Career Education-Cosmetology LOCATION: Career & Technical Education – Albany Campus @ 886 Watervliet Shaker Road BASIC FUNCTION:Cosmetology offers students the opportunity to learn and practice procedures and skills that will lead to acquiring a license and employment opportunities. It is a two-year program with post-graduate summer course to provide an opportunity for students to complete 120 hours of study needed to meet the 1,000 hour state licensing requirement. QUALIFICATIONS:Should meet New York State teaching certification requirements for the Transitional A certificate. Requirements for the Transitional A certificate are listed on the homepage of the NYS Education Department Teaching Certification under ‘Certification Requirements’ in the subject area of ‘Career and Technical Teacher-Human Services-Cosmetology 7-12’ https://eservices.nysed.gov/teach/certhelp/search-cert-reqsTwo to four years of occupational work experience.Valid New York State Cosmetologist license.Experience in providing instruction a plus.Candidates will have demonstrated the ability to provide sound instruction, ability to work in a team environment, work collaboratively with staff and administration. Possess good written and verbal skills. The selected applicant will be subject to a fingerprint supported criminal history background check in accordance with SAVE Legislation effective July 1, 2001. RESPONSIBILITIES:The classroom instructor will teach the competencies and skills needed to pass the New York State practical and written licensing exams through a program that meets the state required 1,000 hours of instruction and 125 hours internship.Instruct on properties of the hair and scalp, cells, anatomy & physiology; chemistry. Course will cover bacteriology; decontamination & infection control; care and artistry of natural and artificial hair, nail disorders; hair removals.Explain the salon business, financial planning, and different career opportunities.Demonstrate to students how to apply theory and skills, and strengthen competencies through hands-on experiences including a clinic open to the community and a salon internship.In addition to the classroom, the instructor will be responsible for supervising and evaluating student progress in the work areas.To be responsible for developing and evaluating course plans.To develop in each student an awareness and understanding coupled with the skills and knowledge in the industry.Instill in all students’ safe work habits, the importance of lifelong learning, and a work ethic that fosters reliability, competence, dependability and satisfaction with their own work.
