Located in the Capital District of upstate New York, Cohoes City School District is a small city school district with a total enrollment of over 2,000 students. This is a competitive, civil service position which is provisional. Provisional appointment is in accordance with New York State civil service law. Salary is based upon experience.This will be an on-going recruitment process until filled.NETWORK ADMINISTRATOR (SCHOOL)DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This position has the responsibility foradministering and participating in the operations and maintenance of computer networks. Thework involves analyzing hardware and software network problems, researching new productsand coordinating workshops. The incumbent may be assigned to work with Local AreaNetworks, District Area Networks, District Area Networks or Wide Area Networks. Work isperformed under the general direction of the Appointing Authority or their designee with wideleeway allowed for planning and carrying out the details of the work. Supervision may beexercised over subordinate technical staff. Does related work as required.TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)Delivers, installs and maintains Local Area Networks, District Area Networks and Wide AreaNetworks;Installs, configures and maintains network micro-computers, routers and file servers; Administersmicro-computer networks and is part of the communications and connectivity team; Gathersnetwork statistics, analyzes network traffic patterns and takes corrective action to resolvenetwork problems involving computers and data communications hardware and software;Demonstrates and trains users in the operation and maintenance of computer hardware andsoftware and computer networks; including Internet access;Researches, tests, evaluates and recommends data communications hardware andsoftware; Consults with vendors, distributors, and user regarding the purchase of computerhardware, software and networks; assists in making budget recommendationsPlans, analyzes and writes proposals to help improve work flow including cost estimate forsystems;Changes system software to meet program objectives;Analyzes computer processing requirements to plan a system that will provide capabilitiesrequired for projected workloads;Coordinates and conducts computer workshops for users to provide for up-to-date informationand support;Plans and implements recommendations for system upgrades;Plans, coordinates, and implements security measures to safeguard information in computernetwork files against accidental or unauthorized modification, destruction or disclosure; networksecurity data breachAssigns network computer access passwords to employees and students in Cohoes City SchoolDistrictInstalls hardware and peripheral components, loads software packages, such as operatingsystems, word processing, or spreadsheet programs into computer;Provides support and assistance to individuals and groups using the network.Other duties as assignedFULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONALCHARACTERISTICS:Good knowledge of micro-computer and related product technology; good knowledge of logicaloperations of micro-computers and data communication devices; good knowledge of local andwide area network technology and administration including firewall administration, router andswitch configurations, and telecommunication protocols and analysis; working knowledge oflaws, rules and regulations and compliance pertaining to data security among others; workingknowledge of data processing methodology and techniques including documentation of datasecurity; ability to define and recommend micro-computer hardware and software; ability todetect and resolve micro-computer breakdowns and problems; ability to write proposals and costestimates; ability to develop and conduct workshops related to micro-computer and networkoperation and maintenance; ability to configure work stations and local and wide area networks;computer literacy; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; ability to trainothers in micro-computer and network systems operations; physical condition commensuratewith the demands of the position.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: EitherA. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered College oruniversity with a bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer technology, dataprocession, management information systems, information resource management, orrelated field and three years of experience involving the installation of micro-computerhardware and software and configuration and administration of local and wide areanetworks; orB. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered two year college withan associate degree in computer science, computer technology, data processing,management information systems, information resource management or related filed andfive years of experience as defined in A) above ; orC. Completion of an industry certified network training program and five years of theexperience as defined in A) above; orD. Seven years of full-time experience or its part-time equivalent as defined in A) above; orE. Any equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of A), B),C) and D) above.SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a valid New York State Driver’s License or otherwisedemonstrated ability to meet transportation needs to perform field work responsibilities in theordinary course of business; ANDIT professional certification requirements in at least one of the following: Cisco Certified - Network Associate (CCNA) Network (+) Certified Information- System Engineer (MCSE) Microsoft Certified System Engineer (MCSE) Knowledge of Google School for Education; across Networksrequired lifting of light to medium weight packages; physical ability to install computer wiring.
