Distinguishing Features of the Class: This position is probationary. This is an important maintenance position involving responsibility for the efficient and economical maintenance of a school facility. General supervision is under the School Business Administrator, Superintendent, and the Board of Education, allowing considerable leeway for the exercise of independent judgment in keeping buildings and equipment up to approved standards of cleanliness and operation. Supervision is exercised over the work of custodians and cleaners. The incumbent does related work as required. Typical Work Activities: (illustrative only) Under supervision, performs work of ordinary difficulty and responsibility supervising cleaning and maintenance of buildings, their furnishings and their immediate grounds. Supervises a small group of employees, principally cleaners, engaged in cleaning and maintaining school buildings and their furnishings. This involves such tasks as sweeping, dusting, scrubbing, polishing, washing, shampooing carpets, cleaning sidewalks and walkways of dirt, debris and snow, gathering and moving school furniture. Inspects work of subordinates to insure maximum efficiency, economy and quality of work. Trains or arranges for training of new employees. Maintains records and prepares required reports. Oversees the use and maintenance of cleaning equipment such as extractors, buffing machines, vacuum cleaners, etc. May perform minor maintenance work such as replacing light bulbs. Ensures all appropriate safety procedures are observed in the performance of tasks. Directs the use of ladders in the performance of assigned tasks in compliance with all safety regulations. Full Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Personal Characteristics: Thorough knowledge of the common practices, tools and materials used in the repair and maintenance of facility; thorough knowledge of all safety precautions; ability to understand oral and written directions; some knowledge of general purchasing procedures and ability to make out clear, legible and accurate requisition forms and orders; ability to plan and supervise the work of custodians and cleaners; good judgment; reliability; dependability; mechanical aptitude; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and possession of a valid New York State driver’s license, AND Three years of satisfactory experience in a school custodial capacity in building cleaning and maintenance activity; OR Two years of satisfactory experience in a school custodial capacity in building cleaning and maintenance activities and one year of experience as a carpenter, painter, electrician, plumber or etc.; OR An equivalent combination of training and experience as described in A and B above. Special Requirements: If this position requires a driver’s license, possession of a valid New York State Driver’s license is required at time of appointment and this license must be maintained throughout employment.
