Candidate Qualifications Carmel Central School District is seeking an experienced, visionary instructional leader who is committed to advancing student achievement and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. The Assistant Superintendent for Instruction must be deeply student-centered, highly collaborative, and capable of leading with clarity, innovation, and purpose across the district’s educational programs. Reporting directly to the Superintendent of Schools, the Assistant Superintendent for Instruction is responsible for the strategic leadership, development, and evaluation of the district’s instructional programs. This individual will oversee curriculum and assessment, support the professional growth of instructional staff, and ensure that educational practices are aligned with research-based strategies and New York State learning standards. This role requires the ability to lead across multiple content areas, support Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), and integrate data-informed decision-making to improve student outcomes. Instructional Leadership – Champions academic excellence and equity across all schools; guides the implementation of rigorous and coherent curricula; supports instructional innovation and continuous improvement; builds the capacity of school leaders and teachers through meaningful professional learning; and evaluates the effectiveness of programs using data and best practices. Visionary and Strategic Planning – Leads the design and execution of short- and long-term instructional goals that align with the district’s mission and values; anticipates future educational needs; adapts flexibly to evolving student and staff needs; and fosters an inclusive culture of learning and collaboration. Exemplary Communication – Collaborates transparently with administrators, staff, families, and the Board of Education; clearly communicates instructional goals, priorities, and decisions; actively listens to diverse perspectives; and builds trust through integrity and consistency. Student and Community Focus – Prioritizes both the academic and social-emotional growth of all students; understands and embraces the diverse needs of learners; remains highly visible across schools; and promotes partnerships with families and community members to strengthen educational outcomes. The successful candidate must: • Hold a valid New York State School District Leader (SDL) or School District Administrator (SDA) Certification • Have a minimum of five years of successful administrative and/or instructional leadership experience. • Demonstrate a strong track record of leading curriculum and instruction, data-informed school improvement efforts, and teacher development. • Possess deep knowledge of instructional best practices, assessment systems, MTSS frameworks, and state/federal education regulations.
