Basic FunctionThis is an administrative position involving responsibility for directing the activities of BerlinCentral School District’s Shared Food Service Programs. Work is performed under the directionof the School Business Official/Manager that involves carrying out policies and establishingprocedures for the effective operation of the program. Supervision is exercised over the work ofseveral school lunch managers and/or cook-managers, and other school lunch programpersonnel. Performs related work as required.Responsibilities:1. Directs the operation of the school lunch program for the Berlin Central School District.2. Serves as technical advisor to the school administration in the formulation of policies,procedures and plans for the operation of the school lunch program and carries out theestablished policies.3. Coordinates the purchase of foods, supplies and equipment for the Berlin Central SchoolDistrict.4. Assists with the execution of the school lunch program budget for current long-rangeexpenditures and advises the administration on capital outlay for equipment.5. Participates in the selection of school lunch personnel and is responsible for evaluating workperformance.6. Executes the training of employees.7. Establishes accounting procedures and maintains records necessary for sound financialcontrol of the lunch program.8. Prepares and analyzes reports relating to the school lunch program activities.9. Consults with individuals and groups in the school and community and provides informationwhich will contribute to a better understanding of the program, and/or an enhancement of theexisting program.10. Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of nutrition and their application to the health ofchildren.11. Thorough knowledge of all phases of the school lunch program.12. Thorough knowledge of institution administration including purchasing, sanitation, safety,equipment selection and operation.13. Thorough knowledge of office management, personnel selection and training.14. Good knowledge of school business procedures.15. Ability to develop effective employee training, supervisory techniques, personnel relationsand community relations.16. Ability to express ideas clearly and to write reports effectively.17. Exhibits Initiative and problem solving skills.18. Neat personal appearance.19. Tact and good judgment.20. Courtesy.21. Resourcefulness.22. Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.23. Familiarity with federal, state and local laws concerning nutrition and school lunch programs.24. Willingness to participate in all necessary trainings as needed for the position.25. Other duties as may be assigned.Job QualificationsA. Graduation from a regionally accredited or NYS registered college or university with at least aBachelor’s degree in food service management, dietetics, family and consumer sciences,nutrition education, culinary arts, business or a closely related field and two (2) years of largescale food service experience in a commercial or an institutional setting, one (1) year of whichshall have been in a supervisory capacity including oversight of staff, scheduling and/orprocurement; OR,B. Graduation from a regionally accredited or NYS registered college or university with anAssociate’s degree in food service management, dietetics, family and consumer sciences,nutrition education, culinary arts, business or a closely related field and four (4) years of largescale food service experience in a commercial or an institutional setting, one (1) year of whichshall have been in a supervisory capacity including oversight of staff, scheduling and/orprocurement; OR,C. Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and six (6)years of large scale food service experience in a commercial or an institutional setting, one (1)year of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity including oversight of staff, schedulingand/or procurement.Vacancies are filled by a certified list provided by Rensselaer County Civil Service. Should nocertified list be available, candidates appointed to this position will be serving in a provisionalappointment in accordance with New York State Civil Service Law.
