The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District is seeking a dynamic Social Studies Chairperson to provide instructional leadership for the Social Studies departments at both the middle school and high school levels. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with administrators and faculty to support curriculum development, ensure alignment with New York State standards, and promote high-quality instruction across all Social Studies courses. This position requires a strong background in Social Studies education, demonstrated leadership skills, and a commitment to supporting teachers and fostering student engagement and achievement.Chairperson – Social Studies (JFK HS and Grand Avenue MS)Effective: August 2026General Duties and Responsibilities:Extensive knowledge of best practices in Social Studies instruction and NYS Social Studies Framework and StandardsImplements the systems of evaluation and supervision of instruction developed by the District (APPR). This includes, but isn’t limited to observation, report preparation, conferencing, assisting and providing instructional leadership.Provides professional development for instructional improvement based on current research, trends in Social Studies instruction.Provides leadership in developing and carrying out co-curricular and extracurricular activities.Recommends new or additional materials of instruction, technology, textbooks, equipment and supplies for the department.Recommends to the Principal or his/her designee individual teaching assignments for the members of the department.Interviews candidates for departmental positions in accordance with District recruitment process.Works with administration and/or faculty in developing long-range goals and plans for the department.Assists PPS members and teachers in addressing individual needs of students.Collaborates with other department chairpersons to maintain consistency with the instructional program.Oversees and coordinates mid-year, final exam, and New York State assessment procedures. Requirements:Appropriate NYS Certification requiredSocial Studies (7-12) and,SAS and SDA, orSBL and SDL,or AC (New Administrator Certificate)This is a 10-month position, plus 8 days in the summer.
