A vacancy exists for the position of Chairperson - Department of World Languages 7-12 (JFK) / ENL (District) General Duties and Responsibilities:Extensive knowledge of best practices in world language instruction and NYS Standards for World Languages.Knowledge of ENL instruction, assessment (NYSESLAT), and NYS ENL Standards.Implements the systems of evaluation and supervision of instruction developed by the District (APPR). This includes, but isn’t limited to observation, report preparation, conferencing, assisting and providing instructional leadership.Provides professional development for instructional improvement based on current research, trends in world language and ENL instruction.Provides leadership in developing and carrying out co-curricular and extracurricular world language and English language learner activities (i.e. Honor Society and Seal of Bi-Literacy).Serves as a resource for effective world language and ENL instruction, current issues, and related legislation for the District.Coordinates testing to determine English proficiency during the initial enrollment or re-entry process for all English Language Learners.Recommends new or additional materials of instruction, technology, textbooks, equipment and supplies for the department.Recommends to the Principal or his/her designee individual teaching assignments for the members of the department.Interviews candidates for departmental positions in accordance with District recruitment process.Works with administration and/or faculty in developing long-range goals and plans for the department.Assists counselors and teachers in addressing individual needs of students.Collaborates with other department chairpersons to maintain consistency with the program.Oversees and coordinates classroom testing and New York State assessment procedures. Certification:Appropriate NYS Certification required:Secondary World Language (Spanish, Italian, French, or Mandarin)SAS & SDA or SBL & SDLTESOL certification preferredThis is a 10-month position.
